Chronic Pain/Chronic Illness
July 2019
"I went into therapeutic yoga without really understanding what it was or how it could help me but entered with an open mind. I have been dealing with chronic pain and illness for sometime. I had tried various types of yoga in the past but found many of the poses to be intimidating. I just figured yoga wasn’t for me. Jessica introduced me to poses that were easy to do, she made sure I was comfortable doing them and explained the benefits and how I could use them in my life. Jessica’s gentle approach and kind spirit has helped me turn yoga into something I now do daily! Therapeutic yoga has changed my approach in dealing with my chronic illness and I have noticed both physical and mental improvements in myself. I am looking forward to continuing along this path of healing." Karla - Yoga Therapy Client

For this client, we have focused largely on restorative postures, such as the resting crocodile pose, with the blocks under the shoulders to help create a gentle chest opener. Restorative postures allow the body to stretch and relax while gravity does the work for you. This is a safe and easy option for anyone with chronic pain or chronic health conditions.

Chronic Pain/EDS/Arthritis/Hip & Knee replacement
August 2019
“Jessica introduced me to Yoga Therapy. Previously, I had participated in prenatal yoga and yoga for seniors. Yoga Therapy was more in depth, looking at the whole person, and focusing on the different parts. Jessica took her time to explain things. She had a better understanding of my issues from filling out the medical history form and knew how to accommodate me. I have chronic pain, and many other diagnoses. Jessica was patient and kind. Yoga Therapy was gentle and relaxing. It has helped me to be more flexible since my hip and knee replacement. I did have some fear about hurting myself by hyper-extending; which is a problem because I have EDS (a connective tissue disorder). Jessica was careful and took into consideration my concerns and made sure I was well supported for different positions. She took into account my emotions and feelings. Jessica made sure I had detailed instructions to look over when I was practicing at home.” Jennifer – Yoga Therapy client

Here is an example of a supported legs up the wall posture. This is a restorative posture that allows the low back to relax. For this client, I chose to use sandbags (7lbs) on the lower abdomen and a light weighted eye pillow. Her naturally active state means that grounding is necessary to create balance in the body/mind. The weights tell the nervous system to calm down. This is an inversion as well, where the body is upside down which helps with racing thoughts and circulation; it takes the pressure off the heart and allows it to rest. The rolled blanket supports the neck to allow the shoulders to relax.
I wanted to share these photos to show that anyone can practice the kind of yoga that is my focus, I never put people into awkward and uncomfortable positions. I do encourage growth of the practice so sometimes it can be challenging but never too much, this avoid disappointment and discouraging experiences.

Conditions that can be improved through Yoga Therapy are:
emotional/mental illness

back pain/chronic pain
pre and post natal care
fertility issues
learning the ways of self care
Here is my story and how I found Yoga Therapy:
In 2016 I broke my left elbow. My Doctor's recommended that I keep moving as much as possible. I contemplated how I might do that with a broken bone. I decided to use yoga videos at home and modify the routines based on my bodies condition each day. After a few weeks, my love for yoga had been rekindled and I discovered a long buried desire to take Yoga Teacher Training. I impulsively applied to the training at Yoga Passage (now Passage Studios) that summer and completed my teacher training 2016. Through that process I became sure that I am interested in the healing, restorative, and sound therapy aspects of yoga more than instructing a class of movement. I applied and was accepted into the Yoga Therapy Program at Mount Royal University fall of 2016. I will complete that program in spring/summer 2019.
I have begun to offer group classes for those interested in learning about chant, yoga and music. I have been offering these classes beginning in fall 2018. I hope to increase my awareness of the healing potential of sound, and share what I am learning with those interested in growing their own spiritual practice.

Treatment in the clients home is an option when someone is experiencing illness to the degree that leaving home is stressful or if they have a mental block regarding how to do Yoga in a home practice. I am able to show them how to use their current surroundings to practice Yoga in a way that is safe and relaxing.
